December – Square Twenty-four
Finally, the last square of The Granny Square Project is complete! The pattern comes from here. It’s a little difficult to follow because the site is in another language with a poor English translation provided, but I was able to get the general idea.
I did have to make some adjustments to keep my square to the seven inches. I didn’t like how the center looked with two rounds of yellow, so I switched to red for the second row. The petals and leaves ended up being too long to stay inside the seven inches so I shortened them each by two chain stitches. On the flower petals I made the first two stitches single crochets and the remaining half-double crochets. On the leaves, I just took out the treble crochets and made the double crochets my highest stitch, working the last four in hdc instead of dcs.
The pattern called for sewing or ironing the leaves and petals down, but again I preferred to stitch them in on subsequent rows of the granny square.
Although all the squares are made, my project is not yet complete. I still have to go back and add a couple of rounds of a common color to each square to use in joining them. After laying them out and looking at them, I think I’m going to use a light grey yarn. I’m hoping that this won’t take too long because it will only be a couple of rounds. Then it will be time to join. But I am excited that all the squares are done!

December – Square Twenty-three
This is the second-to-last Granny Square! This was another slightly problematic one that I could not find a patter I was really happy with, so had to make my own.
The inspiration comes from this pic by Knitterly Things on Ravelry. But the pattern called for treble crochets, making each round very big. Plus there was nothing in the pattern for straightening out the edge of the square. Joining the scalloped edges of the original pattern in an afghan would look very pretty, but for my uses I needed a straight edge. So I wrote another pattern for it. I probably won’t have that pattern available until next week some time.
In the mean time, on to the last Granny!

November – Square Twenty-two
I am really on a roll here. The pattern for this square is also from a book, though a different one that I actually own – 201 Crochet Motifs, Blocks, Projects and Ideas by Melody Griffiths
The pattern is interlocked four-rings square. I really like this pattern. The square is very neat and looks much more difficult than it really is.
I made the rings in earth tones with the two accents for a fall feel. And I did have to add two rows of single crochet stitches to get to my seven inches on this too. If I did this one again I think I would make the rings bigger and more prominent and the edging for the rest of the square smaller.

November – Square Twenty-one
I found this square online and loved it, but the pattern came from a book 200 Crochet blocks for blankets, throws and afghans, by Jan Eaton. So I placed it on hold at the library and picked it up.
I liked this square because it keeps to the traditional granny without appliques or anything, but is still unique and very pretty.
The patterns in this book themselves were what I would call a little lazy. The pattern would indicate to complete a cluster, but not specify how. As crocheters know, there are many different ways to make a cluster stitch and the way you would think to do it is not always the way the designer created the piece. So I had to just guess for myself a little bit.
The crochet language is also a bit dated in this book too. For example, it uses the term “break off” instead of “finish off.”
I am getting excited about getting so close to being done with this project!

October – Square Twenty
I saw some squares with the reaching stitches like this, but none that I liked exactly so I wrote the pattern for this square. It’s a very basic granny with long double crochet stitches that reach down to the stitch two rows below.
Orange is generally not a color I would personally crochet in. In fact I had to go buy a skein-the first I have purchased for this project I believe. But since this is October’s second square, here you are!

October – Square Nineteen
Oh my gosh is this thing not just adorable!? My sister in particular is going to love this.
The pattern comes from here. Although the pattern on that page references yet another page for the skull and crossbones applique which is just sewn on with a tail of yarn. The pattern doesn’t specify the eyes and nose, so I just used my cross stitching experience to make french knots for the eyes and a small stitch for the nose.
I did have to make a slight adjustment to get my square to reach my seven inches and that was doing one more round in black before switching to the white for one row. Other than that, this pattern was pretty straightforward and simple. This is definitely one of the cutest squares from this project.

Here it is, all ready to package and mail out! It’s a good thing I got this order actually because as I was working this up I found and corrected two errors in the pattern. I got an updated PDF loaded to Ravelry and sent out to those who have already purchased it. Fortunately (and unfortunately) that’s only 3 people.

September – Square Eighteen
I surprised myself last night by completing September’s second square after finishing blocking the afghan order that I completed.
The pattern for this square is Square 4 from the pattern book 101 Granny Squares by Darla Sims.
The square is quite a bit different from many that I have been doing. It uses single crochet stitches rather than the double crochet stitches that most of the squares use so it definitely looks a little different. I really did like it, though I did make a few changes.
The pattern called for (sc, ch 3, sc) for each corner stitch which left spaces for the corners and made shaping a little difficult, so instead I worked 3 single crochets in the corners and just worked each corner in the second single crochet of the previous row’s corner. I liked this look much better. Also, if I did the square again, which I won’t right now, I would work a double crochet instead of a single crochet in creating the large loops for the windows in round 2. I think this would help the shaping in forming a square. As it is, I will have to rely on blocking to help with that.
