A Busy Fall

VHCCIn spite of my lack of posts lately, I have been incredibly busy with the projects this fall.  I just have not been able to share most of them.

I completed a project for my family to use for the picture we’re going to put on our Christmas cards.  I’m waiting to get the pictures back and then I’ll order the cards.  Once I mail them out I will post.  I can’t wait to share this one.  It was so much fun!

I’ve also been working on the kids’ Halloween costumes.  I am finishing them up this week and I will post pictures of those after Friday.

Once I finish up the costumes, I need to design a new baby afghan for Kristi over at Hang Ups in KC who did my site redesign for me.  She was kind enough to do it for trade in services so I want to design a very nice afghan for her niece’s baby because I really love my new logo!

VHCBFinally, I had to stop all of my projects last week for a quick sale I made on Etsy.  I sold one of my Very Hungry Caterpillar Cocoon and Beanies earlier this month and the buyer wanted to have it for Halloween for their new baby.  I got that made up and shipped out on Friday.  I had never gotten the pattern for that ready to load to Ravelry so I am also working on that this week.

Maybe after I get all of this done I will be able to get back to the Granny Square Project!

August – Square Sixteen

August – Square Sixteen

This square has been a monster!  I have had the most difficult time with it and have had to frog and rework it on multiple occasions.  It has been by far the most difficult square to-date, mostly because the pattern I was using (here) was for a 12-inch rather than a 7-inch square.  I reduced my hook size and even changed treble crochets in the pattern to double crochets, but I just could not keep it to the 7-inches.

The original square I wanted to make before putting the petals in.

So what I ended up making turned out to be a combination of two different “sunflower” patterns, plus the background from June’s Square  Eleven.

Both patterns were problematic.  The original square I wanted to make was unnecessarily  complex in design.  The entire background is crocheted first and the petals are then put in later.  But I really liked the look of the petals in this one so I tried for more than a week to get it right.  I had also never used what is called the crocodile stitch (the petals) before, which has become very popular lately.

The backup square.

The backup pattern.

When I realized I just wasn’t going to get it to work with the size I wanted, I moved on to a pattern I had saved as backup.  Pattern here.  But when I got to the row that would be the green leaves in this pattern, it seemed like there were several rows missing as it went directly to the edging, skipping the last round of petals.  So I had to repeat the previous petal rows myself.  I didn’t really care for the open work on the background for this one so this is where I used the background from June’s Square  Eleven to form the final square shape.  Additionally, the petals’ tips were not pinned down in this pattern by working into them on subsequent rows like on Square Eleven so I added this bit too.  I tried it without pinning the tips down, but the petals just stood up straight.  This might have improved slightly with blocking but I felt better tacking them down.

I really liked the saw-tooth edging on the original square, so I also incorporated a bit of that, though I really don’t think I had room to do it justice.  I like how the square turned out overall, but it took me a good two weeks to get this one figured out!

I am really running out of time this year with projects I have planned.  I wanted to get the rest of the Granny Squares done in September to get the finished product done for Christmas, but I’m not sure that I’m going to make it.  I have a few time-sensitive projects I have to get done including the kids’ Halloween Costumes.  Just wait till you see what I have in store for these. It’s going to be so fun.  These next two sets of projects are probably going to take me the rest of September and most of October so I suspect the finished Granny Square Project will be a late Christmas present to its surprise recipient.  I guess that’s ok since this person doesn’t even know they’re getting it.

Toddler Dress

Dress AI’ve been meaning to make my daughter a dress for a while now.  Clothing is not generally my favorite thing to make, maybe because I don’t like the added requirement of having to focus on my gauge.  I can do it, I just don’t enjoy it so I don’t make much clothing from patterns, and I design even fewer – especially with regards to sizing.  So when I made this dress I pretty much crocheted it free hand as I went and custom sized it by having her try it on at different stages.

Dress BI worked it from the collar down in once piece with four increases at the front and back of the shoulders.  Then I chained and skipped stitches for the arm holes and joined in the back so there was an opening for buttons.  After this I continued working in rounds and eventually added a row of chain-2, skip-2, dc for a belt.  I must not have tried the finished bodice on her before I started the skirt because it’s just a tad longer than I would like.

The white colar at the neck is just shells, and the ruffles at the shoulder are just two rows of 2 double crochets in each stitch.

For the skirt, I basically used a round ripple afghan pattern for the chevrons with a 3 dc decrease at the valleys instead of a skip-2 so there were only holes at the peaks.  It worked well for an aesthetic way to increase each round for a full skirt.

Dress CI was going to add a shell edging after the last white round, but it looked better when I got to it to just stop there.  Then I worked a long chain for the belt.  The center part is just single crochets for around the waist, but each end hanging down is a corkscrew curling ribbon.  This is way simpler than it may look – just work 3 single crochets in each chain and it naturally curls.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a starting point for making more dresses for her in the future.  I probably won’t write this pattern out yet.  Maybe after a few more iterations to work out the kinks.  Anyway, she loves it because her favorite color is purple.

Party Hats

CAM01504_1

I made these cute little party hats for a friend of mine’s twin girls’ first birthday party.  The pattern for the hats can be found here.  I added the crown myself.

After adding the ruffle edging I changed yarn so the crown would stand out a little, and worked two rows of single crochet- the first in the unworked front loop left after working the ruffle.

Then I did a row of shells (sc, skip two sc, 5 dc in  next sc, skip next 2 sc) around, join with sl st.

Then  a row for the peaks (sc in first sc, hdc in next dc, dc in next dc, [tr, ch 2, picot, ch2, tr] in next dc, dc in next dc, hdc in next dc) around join with sl st finish off.

I happened to have some Swarovski elements left over that I glued to the front three peaks of each.

Just a simple project for a quick birthday gift!

I did get the yarn today for the dress that I’m making for my daughter so I can finish it up this week.  After that it’s back to Grannies!

August – Square Fifteen

August – Square Fifteen

I know that I said I would start in on the parasol once I got the July squares done, but time just keeps getting away from me and I’ve had to re-prioritize my projects.  If I want to get The Granny Square Project done in time to give it as a Christmas present, I’ve got to go ahead and see if I can finish the squares in the next month here.  I’m not sure how long it is going to take me to join them all.

I have a couple of small birthday presents that I want to see if I can whip up real quick this week.  I’ve also been working on the dress I wanted to make for my daughter.  Unfortunately I ran out of yarn and had to order the color online because I can’t find it in the stores and the dress is sitting in the cupboard waiting to be finished.  And finally, I’ve got something that I need to crochet for the four of us for my son’s 1 year pictures.  I won’t say more than that because it’s going to be a very fun surprise.  But I need to get started on that too!

In the mean time, I’m afraid the parasol will just have to wait till this winter, likely after little man’s birthday party.  I did however, find a pattern that I like for it and I really can’t wait to get started.

As a result, here is August’s first square.  The pattern can be found here.  This is another one I’ve got mixed feelings on.  Instead of working the granny clusters in a chain space, it calls for just working them between the previous row’s clusters.  That always feels very clumsy and tight to me.  There were also some instructions missing in the first round that I had to figure out, and each round starts unnecessarily (to me anyway) in the middle of the corner cluster instead of at the beginning  of it.  Normally you would slip stitch over to the corner space to start the next round, where as here you’ve often created the corner space by completing an hdc in the top of  beginning chain 3/dc.  I always hated joining that way, but it’s probably just a personal preference.  I had to leave off the last row to stay within my seven inches.  And my last row is worked with half-double crochets instead of dc’s.  I don’t really like the rounded off corners and I think I might go back and change that.  It would probably fit better with the rest of the squares anyway.  But this one also has the front post stitches that I love again to give the 3-d appearance of red ribbon behind the black frame.  I really like how that looks.

I have to actually buy some yarn for the next square I have planned because I don’t have the color I need.   I need some dark burnt orange and that’s not a color I typically work with.  I do believe this will be the first yarn I’ve bought for this project.

July – Square Fourteen

July – Square Fourteen

I think this is one of my favorite squares so far!  The pattern can be found here.  It made me think of fireworks and I just had to do it in red, white, and blue.  I love how it turned out.  Though if I did it again I’d probably just do the white either at the center or on the edging. It kind of breaks up the lines and makes their continuity hard to see.

I love working with cable stitches or post stitches.  This square is made with front post double treble crochets.

July – Square Thirteen

July – Square Thirteen

I have some mixed feelings about this square; the pattern for which can be found here.  I have done several squares this year with a central motif themed for that particular month.  Those squares were started with the motif, and then the square was created by working into it.

With this square however, the star is worked completely separate from the square.  That is to say, the square could exist without the star, whereas the other squares would not be complete without their motifs.

The star is crocheted separately and then connected by single crochets thorough picots at each point on round 5.  Somehow this just seamed like cheating to me.  But, then I thought about it again.  This project is about gaining appreciation for the vast variety possible with Granny Squares and I guess this is one of those possibilities.  I do really like the 3D effect it gives the square.

I also really like how the granny square clusters in this square are not actually clusters, but v-stitches. ((dc, ch 1, dc) all in one stitch.) It keeps with the granny square tradition, but gives it a slightly different look that I found refreshing.

I did depart from the patter at row 10.  Instead of completing the last rows in double crochets and single crochets respectively, I continued with the v-stitches and liked this much better. I had to do a second row of v-stitches instead of single crochets in the last color so that I would reach my seven inches.

One thing that I was worried about when I started this project was that I would find it difficult to make all my squares the same size.  I was concerned that I would have problems with patterns designed to be larger or smaller squares than the seven inches I had decided on.  However, this has proven to be a non issue.  It has been relatively easy for me to decide if and how I need to modify squares, whether by changing gauge with my hook size, or by adding or omitting rows.

Well we’re half way through the project now!  I have so many other projects that I want to do right now.  After I finish the next square I hope to do that parasol that I mentioned.  Then I want to make a dress for my daughter.  Then I would like to see if I can get most of the rest of my squares done this fall because I’d like to get them connected before Christmas.  I have a surprise recipient in mind for the project and would like it to be a Christmas present!
