Sweet 16 Afghan

Julie's Sweet 16 AfghanThe first project of the year is finished and delivered! My Niece Julie turned 16 in January and I wanted to make her a nice, grown-up afghan.  With her favorite color purple, I started in on a corner-to-corner afghan.  This is a very simple pattern that you can easily google instructions for.  It works up perfectly square, or rectangular with very little effort and I really like how the variegated yarn looks in the pattern.  (We know I just love variegated yarn.)

My own creativity comes into play with the edging on this piece.  I did not write down the pattern for this one, but I will include a very rough account of it below.

Edging

Join all rounds with a sl st in beginning st.

Round 1: A round of single crochet. Two sc in each ch 2 at the end of each row and 3 sc in each corner.

Round 2: Dc in each sc. 3 dc in each corner.

Round 3: Dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in next dc around.  Dc, ch 2, dc in each corner.

Round 4: Dc in each dc around, 2 dc in each ch 2 sp. 3 dc in each corner.

Round 5: Repeat round 3.

Round 6: (Dc, ch 2, dc) in each dc, ch 2.  (Dc, ch 2, dc) in each corner.

Round 7: (Dc, picot, ch 1) 3 times in first ch ch 2 sp, ch 1, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 1. Around. (Dc, picot, ch 1) 5 times in each corner.

Round 8: Dc in ch 1 between first and  second picots, ch 5, dc in ch 1 between second and third picots, ch 1, (dc, ch 2, dc in next dc, ch 1. Around.  Dc in ch 1 between second and third picots, ch 5, dc in ch 1 between third and fourth picots, ch 1 for each corner.

Round 9: Repeat round 7 with 5 (dc, picot, ch 1) in each ch 5 sp.  (Dc, picot, ch 1) 7 times for each corner.

Baby Afghan and Pillow Set

MainI received a custom order request for this baby afghan from an old friend of mine and I was very honored to be able to accommodate.  Her Grandfather had crocheted baby afghans for all his great-grandchildren before he passed way.  Deanne is now expecting the first great-grandchild since his passing and asked if I could try to reproduce the pattern.  Though the result is not exactly the same as his pattern, it is very close and I hope reminds her of him.

I think this is probably my favorite request ever.  Crocheting an afghan for an order is one thing.  But to try to stand-in and create something on behalf of someone who is now gone is very humbling.  I was so touched to be asked to make the attempt.

EdgingDeanne selected three Bernant Baby Sport skeins in a coral, light taupe, and a matching variegated yarn.  These colors turned out to be just fabulous together and I must say it is one of my favorite afghans I have ever made.

DetailWhen I completed the afghan I still had a lot of yarn left; so I made two solid color pillows to go with it.  I made four flowers using the same stitch as the edging on the afghan and sewed them together on each side of the pillows, using a button in the center and adding pearl beads for embellishment.  I love how the solid pillows look against the stripes of the afghan.

FullIt turned out so pretty that I have listed the set in my Etsy store.  I would love to make the set again in some other customized colors.  I am also working on writing up the pattern to add to my Ravelry store.

Christening Gown

I got the pattern for this Christening Gown  designed by Kathleen Harell from my Mary Maxim catalogue.  Persephone wore this for her Baby Blessing, which we had given during the Christmas Eve Service this year. 

I really loved this pattern.  Clothing is generally not my favorite to crochet, however this pattern was very easy to work up, very well written and easy to read.  The bodice, which you can see better in the stock photo here, works up in one piece, from one side to the back to other side.    This is done with increases for shaping at each shoulder.  The sleeves and the skirt are both just worked onto the foundation of the bodice.  Click on the stock photo to go to this pattern for sale on the Mary Maxim website.

Persephone Belle

I hadn’t realized it had been so long since my last post here.  I haven’t had a lot of time since the baby was born, but I do have several  projects that I need to post, so here’s the first catch up post…

This is Persephone Belle on the Ribbon and Pearls Christenting Afghan that I designed in her honor in her newborn photo shoot.  Doesn’t she look cute on it?!  (Thanks to Krista for the shots!)

Incidentally, I’ve sold 5 of my patterns for this on Ravelry since posting there.

Ribbon and Pearls Christening Afghan

As promised, I designed an afghan in honor of my baby girl and I just love how it turned out!  I even submitted this one to Leisure Arts to see if they wanted to publish but they didn’t.  Oh well. 

I think I’ll sell the pattern for this one on Ravelry.  So I won’t post it for free here, but I will get the link added to the item on Ravelry once I get it posted there.

I loved how the ribbon and pearls turned out.  I was initially going to use white pearls but I’m glad I used the pink.  This pattern could be real pretty in reverse colors too with pink yarn and white ribbon and pearls. 

Update:   I have added the pattern for sale to my Ravelry store!

Birthday Skirt

I made this skirt as a present for my Niece Abbi’s 4th Birthday this month.  I wanted to make her something fun for summer so I went looking for a pattern on Ravelry.

 

 

The pattern is very simple and easy to make – done in a spiral of single crochet stitches instead of in rounds.  The lack of joining each round and chaining to take the work up to the next row makes the piece seamless all the way around and I really liked how that turned out.  The ruffles are fairly easy, done with shell stitches.  The first, or lower ruffle is just worked around the bottom edge of the skirt before finishing off.  However the second, or upper ruffle is made separately and then sewn on about an inch and a half above the lower one, gathering in as you go.  If I had that part to do again I would have worked it into the skirt initially instead of making it separately.  Joining the separate ruffle was a bit of a pain.

The top hem is folded over about a half inch and sewn in place to make a pocket for a draw-string.  I really liked that to allow me to make it a little bigger so Abbi can hopefully wear the skirt longer.  (Plus she’s so tiny for her age, I was afraid it was going to be too big to begin with.)

The First Lacy Afghan

I finally found this picture.  I knew I had it somewhere.  This was the first time I made the “Timeless Lace” afghan mentioned in my previous Lacy Afghan post.

This is my Aunt Becky on the left at Christmas oh…what, 10 or 11 years ago I guess?  Gosh I don’t remember.  Maybe more than that.   The Timeless Lace afghan was her present that year.

This picture was taken in my Grandma and Grandpa Showers’ living room.  I can just feel the bustle of activity at the big family Christmas get-together when I look at this picture.  {Insert warm fuzzy here.}

Grandma is gone now, but see the ribbon goldfish mobile hanging in front of the window in the background?  That was hers, and Grandpa was nice enough to let me have that after she passed.  It’s hanging in front of the window in my livingroom now.  I just love it, and I think of her every time I look at it!

Anyway.  Sorry, I digress.  Back to the afghan.  I remember Aunt Becky being very excited when I gave this to her that year and I hope that she has enjoyed it!

Idea – Vintage Placemats

I have been having a really good time using the Word Press Tag Surfer lately.  I get to see a lot of different posts from other people with the same tags as those in my posts.  The problem is, seeing everyone’s wonderful projects gives me all sorts of really good ideas!  So today I thought I would actually start keeping track of those ideas for future projects in a new Category.  That way I don’t forget them!  Now knowing myself, I’m likely to build up lots and lots of ideas and never have time to get to them.  But at least I’ll have the option!

My first idea comes from a fellow bloggers post about a gift she received from her mother of some vintage placemats.   (Click on the photo to see her original post.)  They are just beautiful (and the lovely daffodils really piqued my yearning for spring.)

My idea is to get some vintage material from a thrift store and use it as the center of a doily/table-cloth/table runner or of course another placemat. 

I could use material from clothes or a dress, or whatever, and crochet the edging and make some really neat pieces out of them.

Don’t tell her, but I think my Mom might like a table runner like this.

Lacy Afghan

This is the Christmas present that I gave to my Mother-in-Law this year.  I just love this pattern, it’s so pretty.  I’ve done three of these now, one for my Aunt Becky, one for my Sister for her wedding, and now one for Mom.  The thing that makes this afghan is totally the edging.  The first time I made this I had never done picots before.  I initially found those pretty challenging, but now I’ve also made them with thread.  I hate making them with thread, but I find making them with yarn to be much easier.

The pattern didn’t call for it, however I used cones of cotton yarn instead of worsted weight yarn.  It gives this afghan a really great weight and looks very nice with the picots.

I’ve been trying to think of something really amazing that I could work up to enter in the CGOA contest at the conference in July.  Looking at this I think it would be really neat to create similar pattern for a wrap or a shawl.  I’ll keep you posted on that front.

UPDATE: I had someone ask where they could get this pattern.  It’s from a Leisure Arts pattern book: “Best of Terry Kimbrough Afghans.”  The pattern name is “Timeless Lace.”  I did not find the book on Amazon, but you can get it on the Leisure Art’s website for $12.50.  There are 26 afghan patterns in this book and I have made several of them.   Click on the picture for the link to the book on the Leisure Arts website.
